Gamespot have just released some updated impressions from the near final build of Assassins Creed. After 4 years in the making, production is coming to a close and the Ubisoft Montreal gem is being handed out to have its near finished product previewed.

Heres a small taster of whole article:

Finally, all throughout our time with Assassin's Creed, that sci-fi-tinged hint of narrative ambiguity first revealed at E3 2006 was in the back of our minds. You can see hints of it everywhere in the almost-finished game. Altaïr's health bar and other heads-up display elements look like something out of a futuristic graphical interface. Pausing the game will give numerous references to memory reloads, synchronization, and other technical terms. As we've mentioned before, those characteristic computerized glyphs can be seen when you target enemies and in some other parts of the game world. And remember how we mentioned before that some areas of the city will be blocked until you scope them out from the appropriate viewpoint and complete other necessary tasks? Those barred areas are blocked off by a big blue wall of energy (or something) that bears more of the glyphs. Most mysteriously, every time you kill one of your targets, the game will segue to a cinematic sequence the developers call the "white room," which is a glyph-filled ethereal plane where Altaïr's victim speaks about his role in the Crusades. We've got our own theories as to what all this means, based on what we've seen of the game, but we'll leave the truth's discovery to the player to preserve the impact of that initial experience.

All of these elements of Assassin's Creed are layered on top of the core gameplay mechanics: free-running up building faces and leaping over alleyways, hiding from archers on rooftops, killing your opposition silently, and slinking into the shadows. We had a good feeling that this stuff was going to be cool, but we're duly impressed that there's so much more gameplay Ubisoft has been keeping under wraps all this time. Assassin's Creed is on track for its November release; stay tuned for more on the game in the run-up to its full review.

Blue wall of energy? Ok I know about the futuritic stuff but that went a little far I think, I thought that there would be a class thing or something go into the wrong area and gaurds will try and kill you, sort of like in GTASA.

I don't see how it's "going too far"... they have to have a way to keep you out and the fact that none of this is real, merely genetic memories it would make sense to just have that area blocked off by something until you can access it properly

I'd just like it better if it was with the whole guard thing though.

I don't think that would make any sense though... they'd have to explain why the guards magically disappear later on... and what if you killed them all? if they're trying to keep you from something in the plot later on you could end up finding it too early and spoiling it before you're meant to...
makes more sense for them to just be unable to access that memory yet so there's nothing there until you can unlock it through other people you speak to and things you do

hmm yeah good point but if there where any other medieval ways that would stop you completely I'd take it.

I just like them playing up the whole genetic memory aspect of the story... the concept of reality yet not really real appeals to me

ok, I'm ok with that. I just prefer pure realism thats all. I just don't really want assassin's creed to go into the present or future in the 2nd and 3rd games. I like it medieval.

well if you prefer pure realism you probably don't like video games ... they aren't real, you know
but really, this whole game takes place inside people's memories... it's not really happening... so it's never going to be fully realistic... that's why there's energy and symbols all over and messages popping up all over... you're in a system, it's not really real...

I think that I will fully enjoy this episode in the series but I'm not attached to the 12th Century. I'm looking forward to finding out the whole story of the next two games this is going to be an epic tale
